I first read about it here, but what was suggested in the original article sounded like a long route to go. Google Tasks is kind of a stand alone Google Service, even though it is available to public as part of Gmail. You can access the tasks outside of  Gmail by simply going to:

http://mail.google.com/tasks/ig

Google will of course, ask you to sign into your Google account.

I find this pretty useful if you use Google tasks pretty often and do not want to get distracted by emails every time you log into your Gmail account just to use the Tasks feature. You can also simply mark that as a bookmark in your browser and have a single-click access to it.
