Arpetium.org is a translation website, similar to translate.google.com and babelfish.yahoo.com. The difference lies in the fact that, unlike the other two, this one relies solely on donor funding and volunteer efforts for its development.
The first thing that hits you is the fact that the homepage gets right down to business. No fluff. No marketing gimmicks. Nothing at all except a white text box where you place the text to be converted, with a few Tabs above it and a few sponsor logos at the bottom.
They have quite a few unusual pairings for you to pick from. Pressing the translate button will give you the translation results right there below the text box for you to compare with the original text. If comparison is to be made, it should be with Babel Fish. The look and feel is almost identical, save for one idiosyncrasy of Apertium, the “Mark Unknown Words” button available below the Text Box. And they are FAST!
A few of their nifty features:
- Text Translation
- Upload and Translate Documents
- Surf and Translate Webpages
- Dictionary look-up on the site
- Available online and offline
- Both Individual and Full Suite download available
What makes this application or website unique is that it is community-driven. It does not only translate websites, but it also allows enthusiasts to create their own language pairs. Combine this with the power of the application, every language can theoretically, be covered. Web democracy is just around the corner indeed.
