According to Engineering @ Facebook, the chat feature launched just last year has reached a milestone of 1 billion messages sent per day. This is amazing growth given the small time period.

This didn’t come easily for facebook though, a lot of effort went into fixing network s,constricting data paths and reducing memory loads. It is evident that facebook chat feature has come a long way in stability and scalability since it was launched.

This is a good day for facebook, because they also just caught up to MySpace for US traffic. According to May data, facebook has 70.278 Million unique visitors compared to MySpace’s 70.255 Million.
